Located about nine miles northeast of Montrose is Gunnison Gorge Wilderness. Its boundaries are inside Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area in the scenic double canyon system of the Gunnison River. With not only 17,000 acres of public lands but also of which includes 14 miles of the river. It extends from the boundary of the Black Canyon National Park north to 2 miles short of the merging of the Smith Fork and the Gunnison River.
There are four main trails into the Wilderness area, and they are the Chukar, Bobcat, Duncan and Ute access roads all located off Peach Valley Road. Chukar is the main access trail for boaters but only by foot as the road is rough and impassable when wet. It requires high clearance 4WD vehicles when traveling on it. Boating on the river consists of rafting, kayaking and whitewater canoeists. Motorized boats are prohibited. The river is home to gold-medal winning trout and fishermen from all over come to test their skills here.
Camping and picnicking areas are located in several locations with restroom facilities available at some. The Wilderness is home to bighorn sheep, deer, elk and many species of birds. The area is rugged, but the views are magnificent.
