The Kokopelli Trail in Colorado is a renowned multi-use trail that stretches approximately 142 miles. It begins in Loma, an hour plus from Montrose, and stretches down to Moab, Utah. Established in 1989, the trail was named after Kokopelli, a Native American deity often depicted as a flute player. The trail offers a diverse and challenging experience for mountain bikers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts. One can enjoy traversing varied terrain that includes singletrack, jeep roads, and country roads.
To begin start by exploring the trail out in the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area near Loma. Travel to Mary’s Loop through the Mack Ridge Mountain Biking area before crossing Salt Creek and entering Rabbit Valley. From Rabbit Valley, it roughly follows the Colorado River, crossing Utah State Route 128 and the river in Dewey, Utah. The trail then ascends around the La Sal Mountains before descending into Moab via the Porcupine Rim Trail. The elevation changes are significant, ranging from 4,000 feet to 8,400 feet, offering stunning views of the Colorado River Valley and the La Sal Mountains.
The Kokopelli Trail is known for its varied difficulty levels, with intense downhill sections and steep climbs balanced by more gently sloping road sections. This makes it accessible to both advanced and beginning mountain bikers. The trail is well-marked with brown Carsonite signposts, but a map, GPS, or mobile app is recommended for navigation. There are eight small campsites along the trail, some requiring a fee, but none provide drinking water, necessitating support vehicles to replenish water supplies. The trail typically takes about 5 to 6 days to complete, though advanced riders can finish it in less time.
This one of the many trails near Montrose that are part of the active lifestyle one can experience when living in Colorado.
