Wilderness Areas Near Montrose

Colorado is home to a plethora of wilderness areas near Montrose and throughout the state. In fact, Colorado is home to 42 such designated areas. The Wilderness Act of 1964 outlines criteria used to designate an area as “Wilderness.” It states a place set aside to preserve natural conditions, provide opportunities for solitude and primitive recreation, and protect cultural, ecological, and historical values. It also has to be of a sufficient size to make it worthy of protection utilizing a management team to do so. The teams used include not only the National Park Service but also the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Forest Service.

Here is a list of some of the Wilderness areas near Montrose:

Black Canyon of the Gunnison Wilderness: Located east of Montrose is the deepest narrow canyon in America spanning 53 miles. It is so deep that the bottom seldom sees sunlight and is just a small part of this vast wilderness area. In total, this area is over 15,000 acres. The National Park Service oversees it.

Gunnison Gorge Wilderness: Nine miles northeast of Montrose is the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness area. Downstream of Gunnison National Park, it covers 17,000 acres of land. This area is managed by Bureau of Land Mangement.

Mount Sneffels Wilderness: This Wilderness area is known for its stunning landscapes, including wildflower-filled meadows, sheer cliffs, and alpine lakes. It is 35 miles south of Montrose and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service.

Uncompahgre Wilderness: Located approximately 40 miles southeast of Montrose, this Wilderness area spans a region of the San Juan Mountains. It includes notable peaks like Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn. There are a few passes that allow you to see this area, but you do need 4-wheel drive. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.

San Juan Wilderness: Located 35 miles south of Montrose, this region is renowned for its stunning landscapes. It includes areas like the lakes Ice, Cataract, and Highland Mary Lakes to Uncompahgre, Handies and Ajax Peaks. Sneffels Highline along with Lewis Lake and Mine are also part of this wilderness.
